Allexa Bonner English 3745 Response #11 11/9/2015 I'll Give You the Sun E.E Cummings states that "it takes courage to grow up and become who you really are". This is a revitalizing tale of twins caught in a storm of tragedy and sadness, and they are struggling to find themselves amongst the aftermath. Noah is socially inept and paints pictur es in his head while Jude is the fearless leader , but jealousy and ultimately love begins to tear them apart. By the time they are sixteen they are barely speaking. At first Noah is a timid artist; un til he begins to learn the rewards and consequences of love. But then he meets Brianthe astronomical boy next door who teaches him about living as himself. There is an emotional connection with Brian that Noah doesn't exactly have with Jude and it is exhilarating. Nevertheless, life is not all crooked smiles, brief touches, and adventures with the trees. Jude and Noah have always been competitive and while Jude is acting out for her mother's attention, Noah is losing himself in his passions. They begin to realize that the world has a way of tilting perspectives and pinning you against yourself, and it is not always easy to find yourself within the wreckage . Noah is such an artfully crafted individual that it physically hurts to see him sacrifice his sense of self for the desperation to become popular and to fit in . He is an imaginative boy with a passion for being a revolutionary and he has stooped to the level of his subordinates . And it is infuriating. However, his change of path is a stepping stone towards figuring out himself and for what he is living. His mother's death and Jude taking his spot at a prestigious art school has knocked his buttons loose. And it is hard to pick up the pieces when the world keeps sending tornadoes through your mind and your heart. Brian is a betrayal. Jude is a betrayal. His father doesn't exactly understand him. His mother, the one person that was his, is dead. What else is there? And yet Noah is such a prevalent and beautifully crafted character that he withstands all the strife and learns to be himself . He learns to uncover his passions and be true to his heart . His road was molded out of brutal honesty and lovethere are cracks but it dries in the end no matter how many people will walk over it. Of course it takes courage to grow. Of course it takes courage to be yourself when everyone and everything is telling you that there's something wrong with you or how you see things. But I like Noah because, though those things hurt him, he ultimately knew who he was and only had to grow into his skin and his mindset. It is not known if Saint actually built a working prototype of his invention. The patent describes an awl that punched a hole in leather and passed a needle through the hole. It is known that when an attempt was made in the 1880s to produce a machine from Saint's drawings it would not work without modifications. Thomas Saint was born in the 1700s in Greenhill Rents parish of St. Sepulchre London, England. Thomas Saint invented the first sewing machine design, but he did not successfully advertise or market his invention, His machine was meant to be used on leather and canvas material. It is likely that Saint had a working model but there is no evidence of one; he was a skilled cabinet maker and his device included many practically functional features. His sewing machine used the chain stitch method, in which the machine uses a single thread to make simple stitches in the fabric. A stitching awl would pierce the material and a forked point rod would carry the thread through the hole where it would be hooked underneath and moved to the next stitching place, where the cycle would be repeated, locking the stitch. Saint's machine was designed to aid the manufacture of various leather goods, including saddles and bridles, but it was also capable of working with canvas, and was used for sewing ship sails. In 1874, a sewing machine manufacturer, William Newton Wilson, found Saint's drawings in the London Patent Office, made adjustments and built a working machine, currently owned by the London Science Museum. Sewing machines were invented during the first Industrial Revolution to decrease the amount of manual sewing work performed in clothing companies. The invention of the sewing machine freed women of this chore, liberated workers from poorly paid long hours in factories, and produced a wide variety of less expensive clothing. The industrial sewing machine made a range of products possible and affordable. Since the invention of the first working sewing machine, generally considered to have been the work of Englishman Thomas Saint in 1790, the sewing machine has greatly improved the efficiency and productivity of the clothing industry.

The Government and Total Human Control   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  In Ray Bradbury’s novel Fahrenheit 451, in George Orwell’s 1984, and in Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World a unifying thread is present—the government must have total control of all aspects of society. It must control thought, it must control media, and it must control one’s usefulness to the totalitarian society.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  In Fahrenheit 451, the government assumes total control by banning all books and other reading material. By banning and burning the contraband if necessary, the government can prevent philosophical thought. The government can also guarantee this by getting people to buy giant televisions, the size of walls, which play television sitcoms in which the family can star. Not only do the pointless programs discourage intellectual thought, but they also entertain the family enough so that the family has no reasons to read and/or think deeply about the meaning of the world around them.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  In 1984, the government is a bit more lenient as they will let everyone read, but they edit all reading material so that the materials favor the Party. For the party, revising old articles and other media will ensure that no one will revolt since the rewritten material always favors the Party. Even if a proletariat were to revolt, the Party could eliminate his existence from all forms of media. The Party vaporizes people’s existence to a point where most people do not even think about the vaporized person. By always making sure written history is pro-Party, the Party can ensure its totalitarian government.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  In A Brave New World, the government not only controls how one thinks, but it also controls one’s physical usefulness to his society. By genetically engineering one’s body, the government can make it infinitely useful to itself. To make that one body feel no pain, to make the soul feel like it belongs to the society, and to make the mind open to any ideas is a vital asset for this government. The people are not always worried about death and can always relax in this utopian society since other people pleasure them, and with a society of happy people, the government never fears a revolt.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  By controlling what an individual thinks, does, or feels, the government always prospers.
